Abstract: | IN this investigation, the changes in the blood sugar, liver glycogen and pancreatic lslet Cells were studied after the administration of hydrocortisone, adrenalin and cobalt chloride. All produced hyperglycemia and beta cells degranulation. Hydrocortisone 25 mg/kg body weight was administered intramuscularly for three days and animals were sacrificed on the 4th day. It produced hyperglycemia, beta cell degranulation and a significant rise of liver glycogen. However, the response is smaller in rogs as compared to lizards. In uromastix the intensity of hyperglycemia and elevation of liver glycogen was greater as compared to i 'rog. Beta Cells were most stimulated as a result of hydrocortisone treatment . Adrenalin (0.5 ml, 1:1000) was injected intraperitonealy and animals were sacrificed after 20, 40 and 60 minutes. It induced eiev.ation of blood sugar and liver glycogen with mild beta cell degranulation, some islets had completely normal beta cells also. Cobalt Chloride was injected in doses of 25, 50, 100 mg/kg body weight. Blood Sugar, liver glycogen and histological changes were measured at 3,6, 12, 24 hours after injection. Frogs reacted with a continuous hyperglycemia at 3,6,12,24 hours, with all the given doses maximum hyperglycemia was 3 observed after 24 hours of Cobalt Chloride treatment . Cobalt Chloride initiated a decrease in the liver glycogen within 6 hours and till the 24 hours of the administration, the values remained below the control level. Cobalt Chloride caused severe damage to the Islet. Widespread atrophy and degranulation of both cell types was observed . Cobalt Chloride (24 mg/kg) was also given in combination with adrenalin (0 .5 ml/animal) to Frogs and Uromastix . Frogs reacted with a hyperglycemia and a slight increase in the liver glycogen. In Uromastix combined effect of Cobalt Chloride and adrenal in was more pronounced causing hyperglycemia and a significant increase in the glycogen contents of the liver. Islets of Frogs and Uromastix both were severely damaged, the beta cells appeared necrotic, while alpha cells lost their granular contents. In frog the Islet turned into a mesh like structure. |
