Males Perception Regarding Gender Equality in Pukhtoon Society: (A Case Study of Village Haji Muhammada Jan Khandary District Mardan)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to know the male perception regarding gender equality in Pukhtoon society in district Mardan. This study explored that Pukhtoon society is not very much different from the male's society of other parts of the country. The males in the research local term gender inequality as a result of the social structure of the society which is their norms and values. The Pukhtoon code of conduct is used as a referral point by the males of Pukhtoon society to talk about gender equality. This code of conduct has assigned certain duties to both genders. The religious teachings have also been used as an instrument by males in dealing the issue of gender equality. About gender equality, the males of the area were having very dispersed ideas. They were of the opinion that women should be treated equal to men on certain occasions and not everywhere as both genders has certain allocated functions to perform. Majority of the males said that females should do domestic activities, thus are meant to stay at home. The males were also against the coming of females into jobs. They were also very much critical about the participation of females in politics and termed politics as a male's sphere. Most of the males were of the opinion that education changes the attitude of females and they don't respect elders very much as compared to the females who don 't have any education. Data was collected from 100 respondents of Pukhtoon society. Tool for data collection was questionnaire. Random sampling was used in this research. The iriferential and descriptive methods were used for the analysis of the data.
