Abstract: Nanotechnology can compete current challenges of water pollution and sea water desalination by introducing novel filtration membranes. In this study graphene oxide and silver functionalized graphene oxides were synthesized and used as filler to fabricate antifouling filtration membranes. Four series of bucky papers PVC/GO, PVC/Ag-GO, blend/GO and blend/Ag-GO were prepared (having filler content 0.01 ,0.03, 0.05 and 0.1 wt %) by using resin-infiltration technique and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM. At high resolution TEM images yielded unfolded sheets of GO and Ag-GO embedded in matrix like crumpled silk. Functionalities of GO, Ag-GO and all bucky paper composites like C=O, C- 0 , C-CI, aromatic and aliphatic C-H are characterized by FTIR. Thermal properties of the prepared composites was investigated by TGA and DSC. Thermal stability was found to be increase by increasing the filler content from 0.01 to 0.05 wt % but at high filler content i.e 0.1 wt % aggregation affects the thermal stability of composites. However, an increase in filler loading increases the crystallinity and melting temperature of composites. Thermal properties of Ag-GO based composites was better as compared to bare GO based composite papers. Solvent content and porosity properties were also high for PVC/ Ag-GO and blend/ Ag-GO series.
