Abstract: | Hypertension is an established important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has been observed to be a leading contributor to m0l1ality and morbidity both in developed and developing countries. The present study elucidates to explore the relationship between RETN +299 G>A polymorphism with total cholesterol in male hypertensive patients .. For this purpose samples of 40 male healthy controls and 40 male hypertensive patients were randomly collected. Biochemical analysis was done for lipid profile. Genotyping of RETN +299 G> A polymorphism of resistin gene was done by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in 25 healthy male controls and 25 male hypertensive patients. Our results showed that BMI was significantly higher among patients as compared to controls (P = 0.036). The lipid profile of studied population showed significantly increased serum cholesterol (P = 0.0002), triglycerides (P = 0.0343), LDL-C (P = 0.0064) and VLDL-C (P = 0.0335) in hype11ensive patients as compared to controls. However, no significant difference was observed in serum HDL-C levels between patients and controls. Comparison of wild type GG and mutated GA+AA variant for RETN +299G>A polymorphism did not show significant association (P = 0.2564). Similarly, allelic frequency did not show any significance (P = 0.2752) between controls and patients. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation of SBP with cholesterol in non carrier hypertensive patients (r = 0.5439; P = 0.0294). While a negative correlation was observed between SBP and cholesterol level in carrier hypertensive patients (r = - 0.2082; P = 0.5908). Our study concluded that RETN +299 G>A polymorphism was not associated with hypertension in males. We also observed that RETN +299 G>A polymorphism was associated with total serum cholesterol levels (P = 0.0212) depicting an ·association of this polymorphism with lipid profile making it an independent predictor of hypertension. |
