Abstract: | Currently, the United States of America is the most powerful country in the world, and as such, it shapes global politics to serve its own interests. US foreign policy and its relationships with Pakistan in South and West Asia, is an important theme in world politics. Since the two countries had established diplomatic ties in 1947, the US-Pakistan relationship has been characterized by both collaboration and conflict. During the period from 2017 to 2020, the relationship was characterized by a series of ups and downs, with significant implications for Pakistan. The period was marked by a shift in US foreign policy priorities, as well as tensions related to the ongoing war in Afghanistan and counter-terrorism efforts. Despite efforts to improve relations, including high-level visits and joint military operations, the relationship was often strained by mutual distrust and disagreements over key issues such as war in Afghanistan and US concerns over the alleged support of militant groups by Pakistan. The US decision to suspend military aid to Pakistan in 2018 further complicated the relationship and put pressure on Pakistan’s fragile economy. The impact of these events has been felt across Pakistani society, with implications for domestic politics, economic stability, and regional security. Therefore, this study aids in our understanding of the nature of US-Pakistan ties and provides a critical overview of the implications of the US-Pakistan relationship during 2017 to 2020. |
