This little book is intended to help Civil Service Cadets studying for that part of their examination which deals with the Malay people - as distinct from the tests in the Malay language. The book was originally prepared as a section or sub-division of a larger work on "the Peninsular Malays"; but, owing to the likelihood of delay resulting from any attempt to bring out all the sections (some of which have to be copiously illustrated) in one single volume, I decided to publish each section as a pamphlet complete in itself. The other pamphlets of the series will deal with Malay Literature, Malay Life and Customs, Malay Government and Law, Malay History, and Malay Industries. Each little book is designed for beginners only and is of an elementary or introductory character. The general plan of the work is based upon suggestions made by Mr. W. D. BARNES of the Straits Civil Service.en_US
